Yesterday was quite an experience!!! We were up at 4:30a and out the door at 5:15...fortunately for me, my Starbucks opens at 5:30...so, I ran in, got my 'comfort', said hello to the the ladies that know me and Josh, and we were on the road. My main concern about the whole day involved all of the events preceeding the surgery...As in, waking Josh up early, not being able to give him any food or milk.....I mean, that right there would do me in so quickly...being tired and hungry at 6 in the morning, it's really not a good combination.(especially for a 2 year old)!
Anyways, you wouldn't have known the difference. He was such a champ on the ride to the hospital! We got there and of course as we're walking in, Josh stops and watches the two trains up above...really, I was so thankful for his innocence and at the same time felt guilty that he had no idea what was about to happen! We make our way up to the 6th floor(on an elevator, again, one of Josh's favorite things to do, he really thought this was all quite fun, especially since both mom and dad were with him)!! :)
We waited about a half hour before we were brought back to our room which served as Josh's pre-op and recovery room. The next half hour went pretty much as I thought it would. Once they started taking his height/weight, ya know, the routine check-up stuff, he lost it. He has never done 'well' at the drs office. I use quotes in the word 'well' because it's not like he fails them, he just does not like them. I say he does this because he knows his dad is a doctor so he likes to give them all a hard time!! :)
Anyways...they had a dvd player hooked up to the tv in our room so I put in Wiggles...and to my surprise, that didn't calm him down...fortunately for Josh, his aunt Sarah had sent him a Boz dvd(a cartoon through MOPs) after he enjoyed it so much in Texas, I put that in instead...and all was good!! The nurses were so funny...I told them that he is a fighter, with a capital F, and for some reason they don't ever believe me until they actually SEE him in action. But, all the nurses were of course wonderful and actually the resident working with our surgeon Dr. Keller graduated from Ohio State Medical School. So, that was nice to have a Buckeye on the team!! :)
Finally the anesthesiologist team came in and their first question was...'What's the rash all over his face?" they seemed quite concerned for a minute, but Josh gets incredibly red and blotchy when he cries hard. Again, I knew this was all going to happen. It's so weird...I had played the scenario in my head on the drive yesterday morning and honestly, I think it was more like praying through the whole thing before it actually happened!! So, while it was happening, nothing came as a surprise and we remained completely calm and after some help from some medicine, so did Josh! :) This leads to the absolutely hardest part for anyone, I believe, having to have their child go through any type of surgery...having to hand them over. I don't have the words to describe that, but I knew he wouldn't go quietly!! :) He was sedated, but still aware. I carried him as far as we could go and then gave him to the nurse. All was fine until he started crying again...we knew he was going to be just fine, but I think it was hard not being able to explain that to him, but on the flip side...that's the best part...he won't remember yesterday, hopefully!! :)
So, that was yesterday...I guess, the semi long version!! HA!! Oh, so, the surgery lasted about an hour and we were home by noon! He was absolutey hilarious waking up...he sat up, clapped, laughed, clapped some more, rubbed his nose, and drank some juice!! Then the nurse came in to take his iv out and he told her all done and did the sign for it at the same time.
O.K., sorry for the long story, but I needed to write it out! As for today...you wouldn't really know he had surgery yesterday! We wanted to keep him low key and sitting as much as we could...so, we went to the zoo!! We walked around and had the best time. There are a couple of pictures, but really, it was the perfect morning after yesterday!!
A couple more Zoo pictures if you click on the picture below...
The pics are soo cute! Way to go Josh making it through surgery!
